Job Description


Purpose of the Role: Why does this job/ role exist, what value does it add?

Desktop Engineering are aligned to Strategy, Engineering and Architecture and are globally responsible for Companies Window Desktop Platform Engineering, Desktop hardware standards, Windows projects and third/ fourth line escalations.

Purpose of the role is to provide Technical Leadership and for development of the Companies Desktop Platform via offshore desktop engineering capability.

Activities: What does the jobholder have to do?

Perform all of the desktop engineering activities, whilst also providing technical leadership and local line management role for other offshore desktop engineering colleagues.

Maintain and develop the current GIS supported desktop builds (including Retail, GBM and ATM) to agreed timescales.

Automated Desktop build engineering of unattended OS build solutions for standard Windows Desktop global platform.

Maintain, manage and enhance associated technologies appropriate to the Companies Windows Desktop Build and Infrastructure including, remote graphics protocols, connection broker, Office, Internet Browser,. NET Runtimes, Security.

Package security updates for supported builds as required.

Provide testing and sign-off of appropriate desktop hardware and associated peripherals (desktops, laptops, printers, monitors, scanners, etc. ).

GIS Desktop infrastructure design, user environment development, application virtualisation and development.

Make recommendations with regard to choice of new hardware devices.

Be aware of and use appropriate packaging technologies in the development and maintenance of all builds.

Where appropriate, maintain any legacy builds still in use within GIS supported areas of the Group.

Give guidance to projects and others on appropriate methods of delivering changes into supported builds and environments.

Maintain market awareness of the appropriate desktop standards and contribute to the development of these to improve business value.

Make recommendations on aspects of desktop infrastructure (e. g. performance, security, networking, usability).

Research, analyse and present suitable solutions to meet business needs, demonstrating awareness of implications within the wider context.

Fourth Line Escalation of Production Issues.

Be aware of the published Release Management plan and ensure tasks are carried out in accordance with this plan or escalated in a timely manner

Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate 3rd party suppliers/ vendors.

Liaison with appropriate Companies End User Computing Services, Application Development and other team representatives to optimise value to the business

Assist the delivery of engineering projects to the agreed scope, on time and budget with appropriate communication and escalation to the Desktop Engineering Manager

Fit for production Companies Group Desktop builds and associated products

Package security updates for supported builds as required.

Scope of Role: What decision is the job/ role responsible for?

Provide Technical Leadership for offshore desktop engineering function and assist with wider technical/ strategic decisions for Companies desktop.

Perform local team leader function (resource allocation, single point of contact, management of BAU engineering activities)

UK travel required

10% of role is consultative

Person Specification

Essential Experience: What previous experience is required to do this job/ role?

Essential:

Candidates should have proven 7-10 years of experience with desktop engineering, preferably in a financial company

Desktop hardware and software; end to end desktop service design; Physical, Virtual and Remote Desktop experience

Team leadership/ man-management experience within a technical environment

Desirable:

Have first hand experience of desktop support in a global organisation

Application deployment technologies

Remote access technologies, Mobile platforms

Good conceptual knowledge and understanding of interrelationships between different desktop technologies.

GPO creation & deployment via Group Policy Management Console

Familiarity with Investment and retail Banking environment, ideally exposure to ATM hardware.

Experience of dealing with the requirements of an enterprise user base, including specialist physical requirements (e. g. users with disabilities).

Detailed technical knowledge of desktop hardware platforms and associated peripherals

HP/ Lenovo/ Dell desktop, laptop, trader workstation, trader workstation blade

Thin client - ThinPro (Linux) MS WES 7

An in depth knowledge of the following operating systems: Windows 7, Vista, Windows XP (current SP level)

Office 2007/ Office 2010, Internet Explorer 7, 8, 9, MacAfee or other AV.

Leostream, Quest, SAM Connection Brokers, VDI infrastructure ESX 4. x, App-V, ThinApp

SMS 2003/ SCCM 2007/ ITMU/ Opalis

Active Directory (DFS, DNS, DHCP, WINS, Group Policy)

Mobility solutions (F5, Vodafone, BT MX)

Desirable:
